Quick Guide | Creating a Migration Task

  • Server Migration Service (SMS) provides P2V and V2V migration services to help you migrate applications and data from on-premises x86 physical servers or VMs on private or public clouds to HUAWEI CLOUD Elastic Cloud Servers (ECSs).

  • This guide describes how to create a migration task in Server Migration Service (SMS).

Step 1: Log In to the Management Console

1. Log in to the management console.
2. On the displayed page, choose Service List. Under Migration, click Server Migration Service to enter the SMS console.

Step 2: Install the Migration Agent on Source Servers

1. In the navigation pane on the left, choose Migration Agent. On the displayed page, click Download to download the required migration Agent.
2. Install the migration Agent on the source server. After the migration Agent is installed, enter HUAWEI CLOUD AK/SK to start the migration agent.

Note

1. Download and install the correct migration Agent based on the OS type of the source server.

2. If both the source server and destination ECS are on HUAWEI CLOUD, enter the AK and SK of the account to which the destination ECS belongs.

Step 3: Viewing Check Results

1. In the navigation pane on the left, choose Source Management.
2. If the source server, migration Agent, and the network connection between the source server and the migration Agent are normal, a source server record is displayed on the Source Management page.

Note

1. If you cannot find the record of the source server on the Source Management page, locate and rectify the fault by referring to What Should I Do If Source Server Information Is Not Displayed on the Source Management Page?
2. You can create a migration task for the source server only when the Connection Status is Connected and Source Server Check Result is Passed.

Step 4.1: Create Migration Task and Select Source Server

1. In the navigation pane on the left, choose Task Management.
2. On the Task Management page, click Create Task.
3. On the Create Migration Task page, select the source server to be migrated.
4. Set the parameters of the source server as prompted.

Note

1. A migration task can be created only when the source server is connected to the migration Agent successfully and passes the check.

Step 4.2: Create Migration Task and Select Region and Migration Network Type

1. Click Next.
2. On the displayed Select Destination page, select the project and region where the destination ECS is located.
3. Select the Migration Network Type.

Note

1. If you do not select a region, the region and project you selected through  last time are used by default.
2. Click Creating a Migration Task to learn more about projects and regions.

Step 4.3: Create a Migration Task and Select a Destination ECS that Meets the Conditions

1. Select a destination ECS.
2. After setting parameters, read and select "Before selecting ECSs, read Migration Conditions."

Note

1. Click How Can I Select a Destination ECS? to learn about the conditions that need to be met by different types of destination ECSs.
2. Ensure that the destination ECS has an EIP assigned, a VPN configured, or a private line used so that the source server can access the destination ECS.
3. The VPC security group to which the destination ECS belongs must be configured. If the destination ECS runs a Windows OS, the TCP ports 8899 and 8900 must be enabled. If the destination ECS runs a Linux OS, port 22 must be enabled. Click How Can I Configure the Security Group Rules for Destination ECSs? to learn more.

Step 4.4: Create Migration Task and Confirm Task Information

1. Click Next. The confirmation dialog box is displayed.
2. After confirming that the task information is correct, read and select "I have read and agree to the System Migration Disclaimer".
3. Click Create.

If the created migration task is displayed on the Task Management page and the task status is Ready, the migration task is successfully created.

Step 5: Start a Migration Task

1. In the navigation pane on the left, choose Task Management.
2. On the Task Management page, locate the row where the migration task to be started locates and click Start in the Operation column.
3. On the Start Migration Task page, confirm the information about the task to be started and click OK.
